Welcome to my easy swan crochet pattern. This is what the finished swan is going to look like.

Easy Swan Crochet Pattern 

Abbreviations 

  • st – stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • dtr – double treble crochet

Materials Used

  • I used white, orange and black 8 ply wool which is light worsted in the US and double knit in the UK.
  • A crochet hook, I used a 2.5mm hook.
  • Scissors.
  • A sewing needle and thread to stitch the swan together.
  • Darning needle to weave in ends.
  • A small amount of embroidery or sewing cotton to embroider on an eye or you could use a black bead.

Size

Large swan (Using 8 ply wool)

13cm x 11.5cm or 5” x 4.5”

 

Small swan (Using 4 ply crochet cotton)

9cm x 7.5cm or 3.5” x 3”

Body

Make a magic loop.

Easy swan crochet magic loop

Row 1: Into circle work 1 ch, 3 hdc, 3 tr, 6 hdc, 3 tr and 3 hdc.  Pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st hdc.

Row 2:  1 ch, 1 hdc in same st as ch, 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in following st, 2 tr in each of next 3 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in each of next 4 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 2 tr in each of next 3 sts, 2 hdc in following st, 1 hdc in each remaining st.  Sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 3:  2 ch, 1 dc in same st as ch,1 dc in each of next 4 sts, 2 dc in each of following 5 sts, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, 2 dc in each of following 5 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 4:  2 ch, 1 dc in same place as ch, 1 dc in each of following 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, (1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st) 6 times, (1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in following st) 2 times, (1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st) 6 times, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in following st, 1 dc into any remaining sts.  Sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 5:  1 ch, work 1 sc in each of next 8 sts, 2 hdc in next st, 2 dc in following st, 2 tr in next st, 1 dtr in each of following 3 sts, 2 tr in next st, 2 dc in following st, 2 hdc in next st, 1 sc in each st to end of row.  Join with a sl st in 1st st.  Fasten off.

Wing

Make a magic loop.

Row 1:  Work 3 ch and 1 dc into circle.  Pull circle tight but don’t join.  Turn.

Row 2:  3 ch, work 2 dc in st and 1 dc in top of ch.  Turn.

Row 3:  3 ch, work 1 dc in each st and 2 dc in top of ch.  Turn.

Row 4:  3 ch, 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end, 1 dc in top of ch.  Turn.

Row 5:  3 ch, work 1 dc in each st and 2 dc in top of ch.  Turn.

Row 6:  3 ch, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 7:   3 ch, work a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, a joined dc over last 2 sts.  Turn.

Rows 8-11:   3 ch, a joined dc over 1st 2 sts, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 12:   3 ch, a dc cluster over all sts.  Don’t fasten off.

Turn work over before starting neatening row. 

Neatening Row

1 ch, 1 sc in each st to point of wing, work 1 sl st, 2 ch and 1 sl st in point of wing, work 1 sc in each st to end of row.  Join with a sl st in top of 1st st.  Fasten off.

Head and Neck

Make a magic loop.

Row 1:  2 ch, 10 dc in circle, pull circle tight and join with a sl st in top of 1st st.

Row 2:  3 ch, work 1 dc in same place as ch, 1 dc in next st.  Turn.

Row 3:  3 ch, work 1 dc in 1st st, a joined dc over same st as last dc and last st.  Turn.

Row 4:  3 ch, a joined dc over both sts.  Turn.

Row 5:  3 ch, 2 dc in st.  Turn.

Rows 6-7:  3 ch, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 8:   3 ch, work a joined dc over both sts, 1 dc in same st as last part of joined dc.  Turn.

Row 9:   3 ch, 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in last st.  Turn.

Row 10:   3 ch, 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.

Row 11:  3 ch, 1 dc in each st to last st, 2 dc in last st.  Turn.

Row 12:  3 ch, 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each st to end.  Turn.

Row 13:  3 ch, 1 dc in each st to last st, 3 dc in last st.  Turn.

Row 14:  3 ch, 3 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, 1 dc in next st, a joined hdc over last 2 sts.  Don’t fasten off.

Neatening Row

Work a sl st in each st to st before narrowest row, work 2 joined sl sts over next 4 sts, sl st to head, around head and down neck to bottom edge.  Fasten off.

Beak

9 ch.

Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 dc in next st, 1 hdc in each of following 2 sts, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 sl st in last 2 sts, working into the back of the ch  work 1 sl st in 2nd st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of following 2 sts, 2 dc in next st and 1 sc in last st.  Fasten off.

Join black wool to the 2nd dc on right side of front of beak.

1 sc in next st, 1 hdc, 1 dc and 1 hdc in centre st, 1 sc in next st, sl st in following st.  Fasten off.

To Make Up

Weave in ends.  Embroider spot on beak.

Stitch the wing to the body.

Embroider an eye over the centre circle of the head or attach a bead.

Stitch the beak to the head.

Sew the head and neck piece to the body.
